I own the original 1911 printing of the two-volume work, and it is a detailed look at the infancy of the industry.The original edition is filled with practical hints on everything from - in the first volume - various skematics of the workings of light and lenses to the latest in projector technology and even talking pictures and aspects of sound reproduction. (!)
The second volume is to me of even greater interest, including what are in effect primers on how to make a movie, and what constitudes a good screenplay of the period. There is also a section in volume 2 concerned with the operation of a movie theater. Throughout both volumes, there are a great many photographic reproductions from contemporary films - many of which are doubtless lost.
In short, fascinating and deeply informative.
